the University of Southern Colorado the design team was presented with a
number of design constraints. Budget,
expansive soils, and other site limitations had to be addressed head on.
The limitation of available space for the new natatorium required a
standard size competition pool be installed with a moderate deck space
around it. To achieve this,
the mechanical room needed to be as compact as possible.
Using a below ground vacuum sand filter was an excellent match for
this application. Not only
does the vacuum sand filter provide excellent water quality, it also serves
as the surge and balance tank for the stainless steel gutter system. It also allows for the deck level filter room space adjacent
to the pool to be used for storage and a compact chemical room, as well.
To further consolidate the mechanical room space, a Command Center 1
was used to provide a centralized motor control center that allows for all
the pool and filter functions to be handled from one location.
order to overcome the expansive soils, the entire addition had to be
constructed on reinforced concrete caissons and grade beams. The pool was
then constructed to be a free standing, reinforced, poured in place
